Considering the Autoimmune Toolkit

Integrating Medication, Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Complementary Treatments in Autoimmune Care

Too often, autoimmune care is presented as a false choice: medications vs. lifestyle. But healing is rarely all-or-nothing. Patients need a toolkit — blending reliable tools like medications, flexible practices like nutrition, movement, and stress management, and complementary supports like mindfulness or acupuncture.

At the same time, we must recognize that equity shapes access. While some tools may be covered by insurance, others — like coaching, therapy, or specialty foods — are not. This discussion emphasizes meeting people where they are, highlighting small but meaningful steps that reduce shame and affirm each person’s reality.

By integrating all available tools and prioritizing equity, we can move beyond rigid approaches toward compassionate, sustainable, and inclusive care.

You’ll learn how to:

  •  Recognize the value of both medical and lifestyle interventions
  •  Build a personalized autoimmune “toolkit” that adapts to your circumstances
  •  Explore strategies that center equity and reduce shame
  •  Understand how research is validating integrative approaches
  •  Identify small, accessible practices that support health no matter your starting point

This conversation reflects ABN’s mission of Access, Inclusion, and Prevention, ensuring that culturally diverse, resource-realistic solutions are available to all.
